There is a new not so new musical biographical paradigm where the drinking,, drugging, womanizing is woven into the story as if everybody did it. Rodney Crowell, a rehabbed singer if ever there was one, realized you have to change your friends if you want to stay clean and it cost him years of his friendship with Guy. But what he doesn't say is what about the cost to Guy: The "I'm gonna do it my way no matter what" which includes killing yourself in the name of art. People would come to his Nashville workshop where the great penman would glare at you if he did not trust you and to be accepted by him was some papal gift...Really I can tell you alcoholics are the most lonely people in the world. Whether he was one is kind of a moot issue. A more valid question is would he have written the same stuff without all the goodies?, probably not but he could have given it a whirl. The most well known line "If I could just get off this LA Freeway" was conjured up when he was sober. The relationship with Van Zant is one of those don't kiss and tell... was there a double friend not friend relationship with Suzanna. It sounds altogether normal in a kind of sideways way..The writing as others have observed is full of gaps and topic jumping. It seems there was an excessive use of other artists stories which is necessary but in this case overused. I love his songs but when the toxic elements start to invade from too much information I prefer to remember him as simply a writer without equal
